The Difference Between a Deck or Patio
Decks can provide a fabulous view, while a patio is more private. Once you have decided between the two and choose the flooring option most suited for you, we will start the building process. If you are having trouble deciding on an outdoor flooring solution, to help you decide, read on as we describe some of your options.
A deck is an open, outdoor porch or platform, usually without a roof, that extends from your home.
A patio is typically a paved area situated directly on the ground. It can either be attached or detached from the home.
COMPOSITE WOOD DECKING:
This type of flooring is considered one of the most reliable and durable outdoor flooring options. It may not be for you since it isn’t natural wood, but many homeowners love the benefits of composite wood flooring for their decks. Some of the benefits include the following:
- Low maintenance
- Weather and water resistant
- An assortment of color options
- Will not splinter or rot like natural wood alternatives
- Extremely durable
Composite wood decks are more expensive than natural wood decks, yet you’ll save money in the long run because you will not have to spend money maintaining your deck.

Patio Flooring Options and Styles
Poured Concrete or Concrete Pavers: This is the easiest and cheapest flooring solution for a patio. It is durable and easy to clean but is prone to cracking. However, it can look sophisticated when poured just right and in an ideal shape. Concrete pavers, on the other hand, are incredibly durable and come in different styles so that you can customize your patio. Plus, if a paver gets cracked or damaged, you replace it with another paver, so maintenance is quick and easy.
Brick Patio: Bricks patios are a lovely traditional and rustic flooring choice for your patio. Some of the benefits of brick include that they are slip-resistant, low maintenance, and so durable that they can last a lifetime!
Porcelain: If you want a modern look for your patio, porcelain is an excellent choice. It looks stunning while also being weather, stain, mold, and water resistant. Since it is clay fired at 1200 degrees, it is also highly durable. Plus, it isn’t slippery, so it will work great for anyone with a pool!
Rubber Tiles: You may not think of rubber as an option for patio flooring, but it now comes in a stone-tile-like design with all sorts of color options and is surprisingly durable. Also, we can quickly install it, and if a piece gets damaged, we can easily replace it. Plus, it’s heat- and water-resistant, so you don’t have to worry about burning feet or slips and falls.
Vinyl Tiles: Vinyl tiles are an excellent indoor and outdoor flooring option. The vinyl is made using a synthetic material that is easy to clean and water resistant, not to mention durable! It might not look as natural as hardwood, brick, or stone flooring, but it comes pretty close. Additionally, they are stain and scratch resistant, and they come in sheets or luxury vinyl planks, with the latter being a closer resemblance to natural materials. Remember that hardwood and brick as outdoor flooring solutions are prone to water damage and mold growth. Since they are water-resistant, you won’t find this issue with the luxury vinyl plank outdoor tiles. Lastly, vinyl or rubber tiles are the best to lay over grass. We just have to ensure any rocks or plants are not underneath, and the ground is level before we install it over grass.
Laminate Outdoor Flooring: Laminate is also an easy flooring style for us to install. First, we lay an underlayment, which is essentially a foam pad, and then the laminate tiles are installed on top of the underlayment. One of the primary benefits of laminate is that it is so durable that it can last decades. What makes it so durable is that it is a composite material with three layers. The layers include a plastic top layer, an image layer (this makes the floor look more realistic), and lastly, the bottom layer made up of a durable wood composite. Laminate is also scratch and slip-resistant and easy to clean. Even though there are so many pros to laminate flooring, it’s actually one of the most cost-effective flooring options.
Pea Gravel: With pea gravel, you have one of the most unique options for flooring on your patio. It looks great and isn’t poured, glued down, or installed in sheets. Instead, pea gravel creates a porous floor, so gravel doesn’t move around or track into your home. It also prevents weeds from growing and is excellent for drainage if your lawn has problems with standing water. Plus, walking on it is comfortable, and you only need to refill it every few years. So, if you want a more interesting patio flooring solution, pea gravel is right for you!
